Q. Why isn't the analemma of the cepheid in a plane, as the analemmae of the sun, seen from Earth (and computed from Mars) is?

A. Because the velocity of the light we see it by isn't constant. Neither is the velocity of light the same in water as it is in air:

As the velocity around an orbit changes, so the analemma is bent.

Space is not curved, but it looks as if it is.

Pigmaei gigantum humeris impositi plusquam ipsi gigantes vident.

Q. Why isn't the analemma of the cepheid an ellipse?

A. Because the velocity of the light we see it by isn't constant.

Where is my Newton to conform my work?

"You are old, father Androcles," the young man said,
   "And your hair has become very sparsinine;
And yet you incessantly stand on your head--
   Do you think, at your age, it is assinine?"

"In my youth," father Androcles replied to a son,
   "I feared it might injure the brain;
But, now that I'm perfectly sure I have none,
   Why, I do it again and again."

"You are old," said the youth, "as I mentioned before,
   And you have grown most uncommonly fat;
Yet you turned a back-somersault in at the door--
   Pray what is the reason for that?"

"In my youth," said the sage, as he shook his bare locks,
   "I kept all my limbs very supple
By the use of this ointment - one shilling a box--
   Allow me to sell you a couple?"

"You are old," said the youth, "and your jaws are too weak
   For anything tougher than suet;
Yet you finished the goose, with the bones and the beak--
   Pray, how did you manage to do it?"

"In my youth," said the father, "I took to Newton's laws,
   And argued each case with my wife;
And the muscular strength, which it gave to my jaws,
   Has lasted the rest of my life."

"You are old," said the youth, "one would hardly suppose
   That your eye was as steady as ever;
Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your nose--
   What made you so awfully clever?"

"I have answered three questions, and that is enough,"
   Said the father. "Don't give yourself airs!
Do you think I can listen all day to such stuff?
   Be off, or I'll kick you down stairs.

 With thanks to Charles Dodgson, mathematician.

Three strikes and you are out.

(Toned down for my grandchildren)

 Q. Who mentioned any photon in the exchange?

A. Jan Bielawski, High Priest of the Holey Church of Relativity.

Q. What did Jan Bielawski fear and why did he have no answer, squirming for an escape?

A. This:

"In agreement with experience we further assume the quantity
\begin{displaymath}\frac{2{\rm AB}}{t'_A-t_A}=c, \end{displaymath}

to be a universal constant--the velocity of light in empty space." -- Albert Einstein

Androcles is a heretic, just like Copernicus before him. He will not bow to the Holey Church of Relativity.

Androcles is a scientist, a retired engineer and a mathematician. Newton is my lion. Excommunicate me, I will be heard!

"He that hath ears to hear, let him hear." --- Matthew 11:15.
